Hamilton County is located just north of Indianapolis and is home to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt. It's a charming place to visit year-round, especially during Christmas when the Market is open. Whether you are new to visiting the Market or a local looking for tips to plan the best Christmas season experience, we have a few tips to help you plan your visit like a pro.
1. Book your accommodations early
The Carmel Christkindlmarkt is a popular destination, so booking your hotel or Airbnb well in advance is important. Check out our list of nearby hotel recommendations here.
2. Plan your transportation and parking
- Flying and driving to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt. Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is the closest option for air travelers. Drivers can conveniently access the Market via Interstate 465. Once in Carmel, navigation is generally straightforward, but traffic congestion can occur during the Market season.
- Navigating Roundabouts. Central Indiana is known for its roundabouts, which can be unfamiliar to those not accustomed to them. Prepare to encounter several roundabouts, particularly in proximity to the Market.
- Parking Availability: Visitors can use free parking in the city parking garages. Surface lots and on-street parking are also available but have limited spaces. Due to the high volume of visitors, finding parking spaces during open Market hours can take time and effort. If you're staying at a hotel, consider walking, using the Carmel Holiday Trolley, or using a ride service to get to the Market. For individuals with disabilities, handicapped parking is available in the Tarkington Garage located on 3rd Avenue SW in Carmel.
- Carmel Holiday Trolley Rides. The Carmel Holiday Trolley is a free and open-to-the-public transportation service available on select Fridays and Saturdays in November and December. The trolley provides rides to popular shopping and dining destinations within the Arts & Design District, Indiana Design Center, and City Center. Hop on and off at the designated stop in front of the Market at Carter Green. Refer to the Carmel Holiday Trolley map here for times and stops.
3. Explore the Market area
- Carter Green is home to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt and The Ice at Carter Green. Wander around the area to discover shopping, entertainment, and activities.
- Explore the arts. Carmel is known for its arts. Within walking distance of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt are sculptures, interior design studios, the Carmel Clay Veterans Memorial, and other works of art surrounding Carter Green.
- Enjoy a concert or performance. State-of-the-art venues such as the Palladium, the Tarkington, the Studio Theater, and Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael host a variety of performances throughout the year.
4. Prepare for an Indiana winter
- Pack appropriately. Dress in layers to adjust to changing temperatures. Pack a warm coat, hat, gloves, and scarf for the Market.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You'll be walking around the Market, so make sure your shoes are comfortable and waterproof.
- Be prepared for delays. Travel can be a great way to see the sights and experience the culture of a new place. However, be prepared for Indiana winter weather, which can range from highs to lows and cause delays. Check the weather forecast before you leave, and be prepared for changes in the weather. The Carmel Christkindlmarkt is open during rainy weather, which is often a great time to visit for lower crowds.
5. Reserve ice skating tickets in advance
Ice skating is a popular activity at The Ice at Carter Green. Book your tickets through the online reservation system to secure a spot on the ice. While ice skate rentals are available, you can bring your own if you have them. Reminder: Tickets but are required to ice skate and tickets do sell out on busy days. Tickets are not required to visit the Market and it’s free to attend.
